As a child, I watched my Dad get up every morning excited to go to work. So when it came time for me to choose a career pathway, I knew it had to be something I loved to do. I had read and watched people be miserable at their jobs, and I certainly did not want that for myself.

I have always loved to tell stories

However, finding a job, I love doing, has not been a comfortable ride for me. There was a time; I almost gave up. I thought that it wouldn’t be possible for me. As a creative, I have never wanted to be confined and restricted. Many of the jobs I saw during my various job searches over the years while appealing in other dimensions never quite captured my imagination.

The one good thing about being an introvert is that I have the time to study people and things around me. So when I returned to Nigeria in April last year, I wanted to work in a place where I could indeed be me, without pretence. I wanted a place where I could combine my writing and journalism skills with my newly acquired business skills.

I spent a few months working on a personal project and applying for jobs. I was beginning to get slightly worried. You see, I had taken a step of faith returning home without a job waiting for me on arrival.

While I was working on my project, I was also spending a lot of time looking at Instagram posts. One page grabbed my attention; they were a writing company, so I quickly followed the page. Then one day I saw we are hiring. Hmmm, a part of me felt unsure, I am that qualified. But I went to their website and applied.

Time moved on, and I had even forgotten about the application. It was two weeks after my birthday, and I had been praying real hard to get a job. When I received a call, asking me if I was available to come for an interview that very day or the next day. I said the next day was the best option. So I was told to be at the office by 10 am the following day.

The next morning, I was ready to go. I showed up two hours before the scheduled time. You see, I had never been to that part of town. So I left quite early just in case I had trouble with navigation and transportation.

Going early to the interview gave me a chance to study the company from a vantage point. What I saw impressed me even more. I heard laughter and friendly banter, and then there were the prayers before they started the day. I felt at home, as I sat in the hallway lobby. The decor and the ambience whispered in my ears, welcome home. While waiting, I kept on whispering my prayers.

Dear Father, I believe with all my heart, this is where I am meant to be. Please grant me favour with my new employers. Amen.

To be honest, I was nervous when I met with the panel, but you should have seen the relief on my face when I was offered the job. It’s been a year and two weeks now since that happy day.

Working at my place of work is never dull. I have grown so much. I love my job and my work family. I have been inspired, stretched, motivated by those around me. The reason I started blogging more this year is because of the encouragement I received from one of my friends at work.

So even on those days when I am simply overwhelmed. I am reminded of how blessed and fortunate I am to have found a place where I can blossom and grow while doing what I was created to do.
